Undercase Type is the independent type foundry of Phaedra Charles.

From 2011-2014, she was Senior Designer at Louise Fili Ltd, and from 2015–2019 was a partner at Charles&Thorn, a boutique typographic and illustration studio, and was Senior Designer with Gander from 2020-2024. In 2014, she was part of the class of Young Guns 12. She has taught at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, is a graduate of the Type@Cooper Extended Program at the Cooper Union, and has served as Communication Judge for the Type Director’s Club 2017 Annual. From 2018 to 2020, she developed and led an Open Source variable font project, Fraunces, with support from Google Fonts. Currently, is a practicing Mental Health Counselor in the state of Colorado, and occasionally engages in graphic design and type design work for funsies.
